الغوص بحثاً عن اللآلى الكويتية Diving for Kuwaiti Pearls
هذا الكتاب الذي تحملونه بين أيديكم الآن هو ثمرة فكرة أتت من حاجة ماسّة لدي لمعرفة ما هو سرّ الكويت..
عندما سألت من أعرفهم سواء في الكويت أو في خارجها عن أحلى ما في الكويت، جاءت إجاباتهم في معظم الأحيان متشابهة… ناسها وشعبها المتميّز.
وعندما سألت ما المختلف فيهم؟ كانت الإجابة، إنّهم شعب مثقّف، وذكي، وحكيم، ومنفتح على العالم، شعب يحبّ الحياة ويحبّ بلاده.
لذا قرّرت الغوص في عمق هذا المجتمع بحثاً عن أبرز الشخصيات الملهمة.. ولكن لا بدّ أن أشير هنا إلى أنّني كنت أبحث عن إلهام محدّد، وهو الإلهام الإيجابي.. كنت أبحث عن الأشخاص الذين يجعلوننا نفتخر لأنّهم كويتيون عندما نذكرهم أمام بعضنا البعض أو عندما نتكلم عنهم خارج الكويت.
أشخاص ساعدوا من حولهم أو من يتابعهم على تخطّي حاجز كبير، سواء كان السقف الزجاجي الذي يعلو رؤوسنا والذي لا يسعنا ككويتيين وعرب الوصول إليه، أو حاجز الخوف الذي يحول دون بذلنا كلّ الجهود التي نستطيع القيام بها لتذليل العقبات التي تعترض طريقنا.
وكان شرطي ألّا يكون هذا الكتاب إنشائياً، بل أن يكون تحفة تصويرية فنية لا يوجد مثلها في العالم العربي، لأنّ هذه الشخصيات تستحق أن تكون في كتاب ملهم وكاسر للحواجز تماماً مثلها.
وبعد اعتماد الفكرة بدأت مرحلة التنفيذ، إذ كان علي أن أعثر على مصوّر يستطيع أن يروي من خلال صوره قصّة متكاملة، قصة تعكس كلام هؤلاء الملهمين. وأخذني البحث عبر مئات الصور وعلى مواقع عشرات المصورين العالميين. كنت أبحث عن شيء مميز، عن صور ملهمة وفنية وغير تقليدية. وبعد جهد مضن دام أكثر من شهرين وجدت ضالتي في مصوّر بريطاني يستمدّ إلهامه من الناس ومن حياتهم أكثر من الطبيعة أو الفن.
وبعد العثور على الفنان المبدع كان عليّ تحديد الشخصيات الملهمة. كنت أعرف الكثير منها وبدأت السؤال والبحث والتحرّي، ومن ثم باشرت المقابلات الواحدة تلو الأخرى.
وكان لي شخصياً شرف لقاء جميع هذه الشخصيات برفقة زينا بيطار، رئيسة تحرير دار لولوه للنشر، وكانت الفكرة أن نستخرج ممّا يقولونه كلاماً من ذهب يخاطب أكبر شريحة من المجتمع. كلامٌ من ذهب يمكن لأي شخص الاستفادة منه في حياته.. كلامٌ من ذهب يقدّم خلاصة تجاربهم ويُظهر سبب تميّزهم..
وبما أن الصورة تساوي 1000 كلمة كما يُقال، كان لا بدّ من نقل هذه الحكم الذهبية من خلال صور قصصية استثنائية. وقد حملتنا تلك المغامرة أحياناً إلى معالم تاريخية، أو على علو 400 متر عن الأرض، وأحياناً أخرى إلى شاطئ ملوّث، أو في دفء منازل خاصة.. رحلات مميزّة نقلتنا في أرجاء الكويت من خلال عدسة الكاميرا.
ولقد استمتعت شخصياً بالتحدّث إلى هؤلاء المميزين وسترافقني بعض حكمهم على الدوام، علماً بأنني أستخدم بعضها الآخر في حياتي اليومية.
وأودّ أن أشكر شخصياً كل الملهمين على كسرهم حواجز التفكير لدي وتمكينهم إياي من التحليق عالياً بفضل المعلومات التي اكتسبتها من خلال لقاءاتي بهم.
ما زال في عمق الكويت لآلئ أخرى لم تسمح لنا الظروف بإدراجها في هذا الكتاب، وربمّا يتسنّى لنا الغوص للبحث عنها مرة أخرى..

When asked ‘What is the secret of Kuwait?’, the answer is almost always ‘its people’. When asked ‘Why?’, the reply is that ‘Kuwaitis are educated, intelligent, wise, open to the outside world, they love life and their country.’
So I decided to delve into our community to find those who are the personification of that reply. I went in search of Kuwait’s most inspiring figures. I must confess here that I was looking for a specific kind of inspiration: a positive inspiration. I was looking for men and women who make us proud to be Kuwaitis, in part because they are Kuwaitis.
I looked for individuals who help those around them overcome a large barrier. Be it a glass ceiling that stops us from believing in our own capabilities as Kuwaitis or Arabs or the barrier of fear that makes us afraid to try to overcome the obstacles in our way. I looked for individuals that, by example, set standards that are aspirational.
I always saw The Alchemy of Wisdom as a photography book, driven by images that best illustrated the pearls of wisdom gathered from our Kuwaitis. I wanted the book to be an artistic masterpiece like no other in the Arab world, because these individuals deserve a book that is as inspirational as they are.
Once my vision for the book was clear, I went in search of a photographer gifted enough to take the necessary photos. I wanted an artist who could capture an image that transformed a quote into a story. It took two months of sifting through portfolios of international photographers to find exactly the right one: a British photographer who draws his inspiration from the people and their lives.
With the concept defined and the photographer chosen, I began collecting pearls of wisdom for the book. Zeina Bitar, Lulua Publishing House’s Group Editor, and I had the enviable task of meeting with and learning from each of these exceptional individuals.
Next it was the photographer’s turn. It was his job to find inspiration in the words of our subjects and create a portrait that told the story behind those words. In the end, we used locations as varied as the individuals being photographed.
I have personally enjoyed talking to these awe inspiring people. They have shared their stories with me and I am better for it. I have to thank each individual for helping me to break roadblocks in my thinking, freeing me to fly high.
Still there are many more pearls in Kuwait that are worth discovering, perhaps we can dive for them another day. . .
